Child care is essential to San Diego County’s future
Across San Diego County, families are doing their best to find child care that works for their lives and their budgets. For many, child care is one of the largest monthly expenses, often second only to housing.
At the same time, child care providers are navigating a system where what families can afford does not reflect the true cost of providing quality care. That gap affects everyone.
Child care and after school programs are part of what keeps families and communities steady. When access is limited or costs are out of reach, families are left making difficult decisions about work, caregiving, and their future.
A shared path forward
San Diego County has a roadmap for change.
The Child Care Blueprint was developed through a collaborative process led by Children First Collective San Diego and First 5 San Diego, with input from partners across child care, workforce development, philanthropy, business, and local government. Built from the County’s existing child care planning efforts the Blueprint, and the related Implementation outline a clear path to strengthen access, support providers, and build a more sustainable child care system across the region.
Our vision
San Diego County is a place where every family has access to child care that meets their geographic, scheduling, cultural, language, and economic needs; the child care workforce is valued and financially thriving; and all child care settings support children’s healthy development.
